The main goal of restoration is to improve habitat conditions for native Bonneville cutthroat trout and Northern leatherside chub species in the Upper Bear Drainage. We aim to accomplish this by constructing structures in the mainstem channel to increase geomorphic diversity (i.e., reduce planar features and create more pools and bars), diversify flow and sediment patterns, and support natural processes that maintain high quality fish habitat. Specific goals related to the North Slope Uintas Stream Restoration and Reconnection project include: Increase slow water instream habitats, large woody debris, habitat complexity, and cutthroat trout spawning habitat Increase channel-floodplain connectivity Increase hydraulic capacity and floodplain connectivity at a bridge crossing
Due to the presence of large trees on streamside banks, structures were constructed by directly felling trees into the channel using chainsaws and griphoists. Structures consisted of three forms: channel-spanning, mid-channel, and bank-attached. Channel-spanning structures were designed to increase lateral aggradation of sediment to form plunge or dam pools. Mid-channel structrues were designed to increase longitudinal deposition of sediment to form mid-channel bars or islands. Bank-attached structures were designed to widen the channel and form scour pools or bank-attached bars. Structural material ranged in size between 6 to 20' in length and 2 to 10" in diameter. Structures with smaller sized material and sufficient site access were secured by pounding 6' (2-4" diameter) untreated wooden posts into the streambed using a hydraulic post-pounder. However, most structures contained large woody material and posts were not needed to secure the structure. ***Note: The project location is kept private. The map pin represents the closest intersection from HWY 150 to the project area.
