Ramsey Creek has suffered considerable impacts from human development, livestock use, and nearby wildfire. The creek is straight, narrow, and lacking in the crucial complexity that supports diverse riparian life. Our goal for this project was to mimic the impacts of beavers to slow and spread water, create stream heterogeneity such as pools, riffles, and braided channels, and reconnect the creek to its floodplain.
In order to accomplish these goals, in summer 2023, we installed 35 post-assisted structures in several complexes throughout our restoration reach at Ramsey Creek. These structures, consisting of PALs and BDAs, function to slow and spread water, increasing channel complexity and encouraging the creek to diverge from its straight and narrow path. These structures also help improve groundwater retention, which benefits riparian plant resilience.
