Project Goals and Objectives

BHWC partnered with the Southwest Montana Sagebrush Partnership (SMSP) the BLM, the Youth Employment Program (YEP) and private landowners to restore aquatic and riparian resources in the Eastern Pioneer foothills. We have been working together to restore stream reaches in Trapper Creek, Browns Gulch, and Lost Creek — both on public and private land. The work primarily consists of the installation of low-tech, processed-based, in-stream structures such as Beaver Dam Analogs (BDAs) and Post-assisted Log Structures (PALS) as well as the removal of conifers from riparian areas. This project aims to improve stream function and both instream and riparian habitat conditions. Project work will continue into 2023.

Structure Construction Elements

Wooden Posts: Installed in rows across the stream Willow and Woody Debris: Interwoven between posts to create a semi-permeable dam. Cobble and Gravel: Placed at the base to increase stability and encourage sediment deposition. Fine Organic Material (Mud and Leaves): Used to plug gaps and further mimic natural beaver dams. Natural Anchoring Materials: Additional rocks or logs used to stabilize the structure
